Questions to ask when reading with your child
Below you will find questions that you can ask your child when you are reading together. Please note that not all of these questions should be asked every time you read! Choose the questions you feel are appropriate for the book you are reading.

- Who is the author of this book?
- Who is the illustrator of this book?
- Find a word that you have not seen before or don't know. What do you think it means?
- Why do you think the author chose this title for the book?
- From whose point of view is this story being told?
- Which character in this story is most like you and why?
- What is the genre of this book? (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, science fiction, historical fiction etc)
- Are there any features that make this story easier to read? (i.e headings, bold print etc?)
- How do you think this story will end?
- Who is the main character of this story?
- What is the setting of the story?
- Is there a problem in this story? What is it? How was it solved? Who helped solve it?
- Predict what will happen next
- In 3 sentences or less, tell what this story is about
Activities you can do after reading:
- Use the events in this story to create a math story problem
- Choose 1 sentence and read it aloud with amazing expression
- List 3 words that describe the main character
- Try and make a text to self connection
- Can you make a text to world connection?
- Can you make a text to text connections? (Does this book remind you of another book we've read?)
- Find a noun in the book. Is it a person? place? or thing?
- Find an adjective (describing word) in the book. What does the adjective describe?
- Find a verb (action word) in the book.
