Phonics
For phonics we have been reviewing the sounds that our short vowels make.
We have also been learning about closed syllable words. Closed syllable words are words that have a consonant on either side of the vowel. For example the word cat is a closed syllable word. There is a consonant c and t on either side of the vowel. When there is a consonant on either side of the vowel, then the vowel will make it's short sound because it's closed in by consonants. We not only have been practicing one syllable words but we've been reading and examining two syllables words too. Words such as sunset, which is split into two syllables like this sun/set. Both syllables are closed syllables because there is a consonant on either side of the vowel.
We teach students the different syllable types (there's 7 in all that they'll be learning) for a few reasons. First it does help students with spelling because they can break a word down into it's parts, and knowing how they syllable types are made up is very helpful with spelling patterns as well. It also helps students decode or figure out words that they don't know.
